Yankees activate Luke Voit, place Anthony Rizzo on COVID-IL

The Yankees activated Luke Voit and placed Anthony Rizzo on COVID-IL. Manager Aaron Boone says Rizzo tested positive, according to The Athletic’s Lindsey Adler. He also shows some symptoms. As a positive test, it is quarantined for at least 10 days.

The Yankees are now further hampered by an ongoing COVID outbreak that has placed Gerrit Cole, Jordan Montgomery and Gary Sanchez on the IL in the past few days. He has had a stellar debut as a Yankee since being taken on in a deal shortly before the deadline. In nine games he cut .281 / .400 / .563 for a wRC + of 163.

The club will now turn to Voit and hope that they can return to the excellent form of the previous year. His wRC + of 152 in 2020 was one of the best in the league. But 2021 so far has been a fight with a wRC + of 98 while struggling with various injuries. The club reportedly almost traded Voit after taking over Rizzo, but the deal failed in the final hour. After a knee injury in July, he started a rehabilitation assignment just a few days ago. But it seems Rizzo’s positive test sped his return.

While the team is trying hard to cover all of these missing players, the team is in a hot streak and is currently only 1 1/2 away from a playoff spot.
