Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen are getting divorced after 13 years of marriage

Star NFL quarterback Tom Brady and supermodel Gisele Bundchen ended their more than 13-year marriage on Friday after splitting after years of intrigue from fans and tabloids and more recent speculation about Brady’s long playing career and its impact on their relationship.

Brady said in his post that he and Bundchen finalized their divorce in the last few days.

“We made this decision amicably and we are grateful for the time we spent together,” Brady said. “We have come to this decision to end our marriage after much deliberation. This is of course painful and difficult as it is for many people around the world who are going through the same thing every day. However, we wish each other nothing but the best as we pursue the new chapters in our lives that are yet to be written.”

Bundchen said in a post on Instagram that she and Brady will continue to raise their children together “to give them the love, care and attention they so much deserve.”

“The decision to end a marriage is never easy, but we have grown apart and while it’s obviously difficult to go through something like this, I feel blessed for the time we had together and always wish Tom the best .”

Brady, 45, has played professional football for more than two decades, and his team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, slipped earlier this season due in part to a decline in his game. The Buccaneers lost a game to the Baltimore Ravens Thursday night, falling to 3-5 and giving Brady his first three-game losing streak since 2002.

Bundchen, 42, has spoken publicly about wanting to retire and spend more time with his family. Brady retired after last season, then reversed his decision and chose to return to the Buccaneers, the team he led to a Super Bowl in the 2020 season.

Bummel filed for divorce in Glades County, Fla. on Friday. According to court documents, Bummel and Brady reached a prenuptial agreement earlier this week that included a parenting plan. The terms of this agreement have been filed confidentially with the court.

Both Brady and Bundchen also completed four-hour parenting and family stabilization classes earlier this week, which are required in Florida when a divorced couple has minor children.

Bundchen and Brady have two children together – a son, Benjamin, 12, and a daughter, Vivian, 9. Brady also has a son, Jack, 15, from a previous relationship with actress Bridget Moynahan.

Brady did not appeal the divorce, waiving a court hearing and statutory waiting periods, and the divorce was approved by a judge on Friday.

Chris Melcher, a divorce attorney and partner at Walzer Melcher & Yoda, said that “the couple handled things in an exemplary manner, settling things quickly and quietly.”

“It was important for Tom and Gisele to come to terms not to tarnish their reputations by airing a messy divorce publicly,” Melcher said. “It would have been a distraction that could have damaged her reputation.”

Ever since they met, Brady, a star quarterback, and Bundchen, a supermodel, have been a high-profile couple who are constantly in the public spotlight. By the time they met, Brady had already won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, and Bundchen was one of the most famous people in the world, a fixture on magazine covers and one of the top figures in fashion. In 2016, she was reportedly the highest paid (and richest) model in the world.

During the time they were together, Brady won four other championships, including one with the Buccaneers, with Bundchen often supporting him at games and trophy celebrations.

Brady and Bundchen married in 2009 after meeting through a boyfriend and went on their first date in 2006.

“The moment I saw him, he smiled and I was like, ‘That’s the most beautiful, most charismatic smile I’ve ever seen!'” Bundchen told Vanity Fair in 2009. “We sat and talked for three hours. I had to go home for Christmas, but I didn’t want to go. Do you know that feeling of not being able to get enough? From the day we met, we haven’t gone a day that we haven’t spoken.”

They had two ceremonies, one at a Catholic church in Santa Monica, California and one with friends in Costa Rica.

“Sometimes I tell people that my husband and I love each other so much that we’ve married twice,” Bundchen wrote in Lessons: My Journey to a Meaningful Life.

After 22 seasons in the NFL, Brady announced his retirement in February, but then announced in March that he would be returning for another season. Since then, there has been much speculation as to whether Brady and Bundchen fought over his decision to return to football. That has also led to questions about whether their marital struggles have affected Brady on the field.

Before the season started, Brady missed several practice sessions as well as two preseason games. Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles told reporters in August that Brady had been excused while he “will attend to some personal matters.”

Bowles told reporters Friday he wasn’t sure how the divorce would affect Brady’s professional life.

“He’s doing his job when he’s out here, and he’s smiling a lot, and that’s really all there is to believe in,” Bowles said. “I think everyone – no matter what profession – goes through some things, that’s how you deal with it and come out of it. I’m sure there’s something on him when he leaves work and all – I don’t know how much, I think that’s a question for him.”
