Semaglutide has already been approved as a treatment to control high blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, for the study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the researchers used the drug as a long-term aid in weight loss.

Their results were remarkable: three quarters of the subjects who received a dose of 2.4 mg semaglutide over a period of 68 weeks lost at least 10 percent of their body weight, and more than a third lost at least 20 percent of their total weight. In other words, out of a total of 1,961 test subjects, those who received the drug lost an average of 14.9 percent of their weight, compared with a 2.4 percent decrease in the placebo group.

“No other drug has come close to this weight loss,” said the study’s lead author. Rachel Batterham, Professor of Obesity, Diabetes and Endocrinology at University College London (UCL). “For the first time, people can achieve through medication what only weight loss surgery could do,” she added.

Semaglutide mimics a hormone known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that the gut naturally releases into the bloodstream after meals. The study found that those who take the drug feel less hungry and more bloated, making it easier to cut down on their overall caloric intake and lower their overall body weight. However, 74 percent of patients on semaglutide reported at least one side effect, including nausea, vomiting, or constipation. According to a study recently published in the medical journal Obesity, people who successfully lose weight have one thing in common: their exercise schedule.

The researchers surveyed 375 adult volunteers who had had 30 pounds of weight loss for a year or more and found that the key to their success was in the consistency of their exercise routine.
