The Texas Democrats are calling for Senator Cruz to step down after unconfirmed pictures allegedly displaying him on his journey to Cancun

“Texans are dying and you are flying to Cancun,” the Texas Democrats said in a tweet late Wednesday night, adding the hashtag “#TedCruzRESIGN”.

A Democratic super-PAC, American Bridge, also called for Cruz to resign.

“Senator Cruz should do his constituents a favor and stay on the beach instead of being paid by taxpayers for a job he is clearly not interested in,” the group’s president Bradley Beychok said in a statement.

Cruz was first elected to the Senate in 2012, narrowly beating former Congressman Beto O’Rourke (D) to win re-election in 2018, and is widely considered a potential presidential candidate for 2024. He ran unsuccessfully for the year’s GOP president nomination 2016 and became one of the former president’s most staunch defenders in Congress after being among the harshest critics of Donald Trump during the primaries.

Photos quickly shared on social media overnight showed a man who could be a senator at an airport and on a plane. Some photos showed a gray face mask that appeared to resemble one that Cruz wore when President Biden was inaugurated.

According to the social media posts, Cruz appeared to be at the Houston airport, preparing to board a United Airlines flight from Houston to Fort Lauderdale with an ongoing flight to Cancun.

In Texas, there were more than 3 million customers on the dark Wednesday afternoon, according to, which tracks outages across the country. On Thursday morning it was about 500,000.

As outrage over Cruz grew online, his former opponent O’Rourke highlighted his own efforts to help the Texans through the crisis.

“We made over 151,000 calls to seniors in Texas tonight,” O’Rourke said in a tweet on Wednesday night. “One of us [volunteers] spoke to a man who was stranded at home in Killeen with no electricity, had not eaten in 2 days, took him to a warming center and a hot meal. Help us reach more people and join us tomorrow. “
