How eggs (and egg whites in particular) boost collagen production

Packed with a host of health benefits and vitamins, eggs can support every stage of your weight loss journey – providing plenty of protein before, during or after you’ve reached your goals. Protein, Kung explains, is especially helpful when it comes to producing and strengthening collagen.

“Egg whites are rich in collagen-boosting amino acids, and yolks are a decent source of collagen,” says Kung. “Eggs are an affordable and versatile ingredient that can help us meet our collagen needs,” she adds. Newmark agrees, noting that egg whites are “rich in proline,” one of the amino acids “required for collagen formation.”

Additional health benefits associated with weight loss

Experts emphasize that when preparing a meal with protein, other sources of vitamins and minerals, such as skin-friendly greens and leafy vegetables, should also be included. Eggs and egg whites are easy to include in many meals, Sullvan says, and provide protein “that can be paired with a lot of things like veggies.” This food “works great for a weight loss goal,” he continues, since protein helps maintain muscle mass “to keep a great metabolism while trying to lose weight.”

Cowin also points out that protein is “very high in protein” and also “low in calories,” so it can help prevent you from gaining weight again at breakfast, unlike other foods. Cowin calls them “a good source of B vitamins” and suggests making an “omelet with them plus veggies” to further boost your overall health and extra glowing, supple skin. “Some good vegetable options include spinach, mushrooms, and onions,” he recommends.
