The Houston structure agency was shortlisted for the Houston Endowment HQ competitors

Houston’s Foam / Shieh Architects was the only local company shortlisted in an international competition to design a new headquarters for the Houston Endowment.

The Competition for the design of a 40,000 square meter building According to Malcolm Reading Consultants, the organizer of the competition, 121 team entries, including 354 sole proprietorships, were submitted on 1.5 hectares west of downtown near Spotts Park.

Four were selected. They include:

Based in Houston Schaum / Shieh Architects with HKS and Andrea Cochran landscape architecture

Based in New York Deborah Berke Partners with David Rubin Land Collective and Atelier Ten

Based in Los Angeles Kevin Daly Architects with TLS Landscape Architecture, Productora and Transsolar

Based in Seattle Olson Knowledgeable with Surfacedesign, Inc.

Companies were asked to demonstrate their qualifications using examples of previous work and communicate how they would approach the $ 20 million project at headquarters.

“We were thrilled with the response to our competition. We would like to thank all applicants for the effort they put into their submissions. It was a privilege to see so much talent and vision,” said Ann Stern, President and Houston Endowment CEO made the announcement. “We look forward to picking a winner later this year who will help us bring more great architecture to Houston and give us headquarters that will better assist the foundation in pursuing our mission.”

The philanthropic organization was founded in 1937 by Jesse and Mary Gibbs Jones and has an endowment of $ 1.8 billion.

Contest Director Malcolm Reading said the finalists displayed the “strongest blend of skills, expertise and understanding of the ambitions of the project results”.

The four teams will attend a site visit to Houston later this month. They have 10 weeks to develop a concept before being interviewed by a selection committee. In addition to Stern, committee members include: Jesse H. Jones II, Chairman of the Houston Endowment Board; Guy Hagstette, Vice President, Parks and Civic Projects, Children’s Foundation; Joseph C. Dilg, board member, Houston Endowment; Tom Forney, President and CEO of Forney Construction and Malcolm Reading, Contest Director. Two more members will be announced in the coming weeks.

Funding for the project has been secured, the foundation said, and the building is expected to open in May 2022. The winner is expected to be announced in November.

Schaum / Shieh was founded in 2009 by Troy Schaum and Rosalyne Shieh and has offices in Houston and New York. In Houston, the company designed the White Oak Music Hall in the near north.
