NETHERLANDS – For Kristi DuBois, buying Omnibus Home Health Care was a godsend.
Business partner and CFO Mitchell Viccknair was working towards becoming a deacon at his church and was looking for some sort of missionary work, she said. The plan was that they would buy omnibus and ask about their religious preference when assessing patients. From there they would compile a list of people willing to go out and pray with the patients.
Then COVID hit and the plan changed.
“It took a different path than we anticipated,” DuBois said. “We were still able to reach people. We really got to touch a lot of people in a different way than we planned. It wasn’t our plan. It was God’s plan.”
Omnibus Home Health Care offers a range of services including skilled nursing, home health care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, IV transfusions, medication administration, health education, wound care and social services.
“Omnibus means caring for everyone,” said Vicknair. “We take care of the whole person and therefore also of the family. They don’t just care about the patient. And if you’re in their house, for one thing, they let you into their house, and you have a ton of opportunities to help people everywhere.
Omnibus has 25 employees, including nurses and staff, and approximately 150 patients. Team members work with many different doctors and try to make patients as independent as possible.
“Our goal is to get them back to where they were, or better,” Vicknair said.
Establishing a relationship with the patient is critical to the care provided. The nurse sees the patient and learns their special needs.
There’s a knowledge deficit for some people who have diabetes or high blood pressure and find it difficult to stick to a diet, but providing weekly home nursing care in their own home shows what they need to do, Vicknair said.
Omnibus started in Port Arthur and moved to the current location at 1455 SUS 69 in the Netherlands in September 2020 behind the Schooner Restaurant.
Since then there has been COVID, the TPC explosion, floods with Imelda and more that have kept them from getting to their patients.
“I am so proud of my nurses. They got in touch with every single person, so at least we knew where they were and what their plan was,” Vicknair said. “We’re trying to help them before these things happened. Luckily we have contingency plans in place and can contact someone and make sure they are safe.”
Omnibus is working to take the extra step by identifying patient needs. For example, they need groceries, so Omnibus guides them in the right direction.
Jennifer Sterling, Director of Nursing, is another part of the team. Her responsibilities include overseeing the nurses, making sure they coordinate with the doctors, keeping up to date with training and any updates coming from the Centers for Disease Control.
Virtual conference sessions are held two weeks prior to required recertification to discuss patient cases.
And there’s the human touch.
Some patients may not see anyone other than their nurse for the entire week, and the nurse needs to figure out what that person needs.
“Sometimes they need a friend. Sometimes they need to cry on your shoulder and sometimes they need to be told, ‘Hey, you need to stop eating all that salt,'” Sterling said.
Home nursing also keeps up with a patient’s medications. Sterling said you might have a patient who was given medication by a GP but went to an ER and got a prescription from there, then visited his sister and saw her doctor and got more medication that her GP gave her nothing knows.
