A team from China’s Huazhong University of Science and Technology examined the results of 27 studies involving 2,194 participants. The pooled results showed that green tea significantly reduced fasting blood sugar.

Although short-term studies showed that green tea supplementation showed “significantly reduced fasting glucose,” long-term studies evaluating the effects of green tea supplementation on glycemic control are needed, the team said.

Green tea is made from the fresh leaves of the camellia sinensis and has played an important dietary and medicinal role throughout history, particularly in Asian countries.

It contains various effective compounds including antioxidants, vitamins, carbohydrates, proteins, minerals and flavonoid-like polyphenols that may be beneficial in preventing diabetes.
