Interstate 84 in the Columbia River Gorge will be closed as more snow and freezing rain can be seen in the area, the Oregon Department of Transportation said Friday evening.
The freeway will shut down between Milepost 17 near Troutdale and Milepost 62 near Hood River at 9:00 p.m. The state transit ministry said it would reopen the highway “when it is safe” but did not specify a time.
I-84 had several weather-related accidents on Friday, including one in which the eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed for at least an hour. Several ramps along the motorway were closed throughout the day.
The state transit ministry and public safety agencies encouraged people to stay at home and off the road unless strictly necessary.
They asked drivers who will have to travel this weekend to wear chains, plan ahead, watch the forecast and anticipate delays.
