FORT MYERS, Florida – Research by the American Seniors Housing Associations shows that seniors can increase their longevity through quality of life, whether in an assisted living facility or at home.
Amity Home Care’s Dee Chamberlain says not everyone needs a licensed nurse to be a janitor. It just depends on your needs. She says: “Normally, a companion or a housewife does not necessarily have to have a license. However, most companies prefer to teach them how to interact with and serve their patients well. But they’re not necessarily home health aids. “
Pat Sheehy, 87, moved to Southwest Florida from Cape Cod, Massachusetts after her husband died a year and a half ago. She also had shoulder surgery around the same time. In the end, she signed up with Cypress Cove’s Home Health Services, which are covered by Medicare. She recalls, “People were there to help me, get medication and so on and so on and just to monitor my recovery.”
According to Louisa Cannamela, Vice President of Clinical Services at Cypress Cove, seniors value their independence. She adds, “It is absolutely essential for your overall well-being, not just your physical, but also your emotional and psychological well-being. There are many people who can extend their homes within 3 to 5 years with just a little help. “
Joyce Bailey, a working artist in her golden years, is still out and about. She needs home nursing for a few hours a day, especially after losing her husband less than a year ago. She says they make her life more comfortable. She says, “Between the medical plan and your life, there are all these other things that you have to do. There’s the laundry. There’s the ironing. There’s the cleaning of the refrigerator. There’s the washing up of your plants. In my case I sometimes have to move the pictures. “
Says Cannamela, “Your companion grooming really is more of that companion. They don’t usually help you shower. This is more of that home health aid that learns transfer and safety techniques.”
