Lucille hands out 3,000 meals on MLK day
Lucille’s Restaurant and Chef Chris Williams will be serving 3,000 meals next Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Two thousand of the meals and 500 kits for personal protective equipment will go to two distribution locations in Fort Bend County, one in Richmond and one in Rosenberg. The remaining thousand meals, consisting of pork chops, mashed potatoes, gravy and cabbage or bistro a la Mexicana, Spanish rice and charro beans, are distributed in Houston’s historic Black Fifth Ward neighborhood. The program is organized by Lucilles 1913, the community initiative Williams founded at the start of the coronavirus pandemic to tackle food insecurity in Houston and beyond. Lucilles 1913 has donated more than 100,000 meals to Houstoners since the pandemic began.
B & B Butchers launch the ghost kitchen in the Galleria area
Berg Hospitality, the minds behind The Butcher Shop at B & B, BB Lemon and BB Italia Kitchen & Bar, have announced a new virtual food hall operated by CloudKitchens, according to the Houston Food Finder. Fair Food Co., 5832 Fairdale, offers delivery meals from Berg Hospitality’s menus, including 20-ply lasagna from BB Italia and the lobster roll from BB Lemon. Home-cooked meals such as steaks from the butcher’s shop are also available. In the dining room there are also restaurants such as Birria Los Primos and the healthy Mexican restaurant IOEATS. Orders can be placed through most delivery apps, including DoorDash, UberEats, and Postmates.
Former Houston chef opens restaurant in Wimberley
Chef Ryan Hildebrand, formerly FM Kitchen & Bar and Triniti, has big plans to open a new destination restaurant in Hill Country. According to CultureMap, the chef and his family have lived in Wimberley and are planning to build a “Hill Country Bistro”. The restaurant due to open this summer is called Hildee’s and serves game varieties such as smoked salmon, trout, quail, venison and brisket, as well as soups, salads and take-away dishes such as fried chicken.
A grocery store opens in Fifth Ward, dealing with the fight against food apartheid
The Business Journal reports that a new grocery store and meat market opened in Houston’s Fifth Ward to fight food apartheid. The Telomarkt, which opened on January 9th, was developed with federal grants with the aim of providing grocery stores for parts of the city that in the past lacked fresh, healthy foods such as products and meat. The grant was made available through the Houston City Food Deserts Initiative. The grocery store is located on 5702 Lyons Avenue, northeast of Downton Houston, in an area that includes the historically black neighborhood of Kashmere Gardens.
