Shahnaz Husain, renowned and recognized pioneer of the beauty movement, answers some of the most common questions about beauty and grooming
Q. I have acne on my back and some spots too. How can you get rid of them?
A. Check for dandruff as this can lead to acne on your back and shoulders. Apply an astringent lotion to your back with cotton wool twice a day. Mix a little rose water with sandalwood paste and apply it. Wash it off after 15 minutes. Sandalwood paste can be applied directly to the eruptions. Mix Multani Mitti with sandalwood paste, rose water and lemon juice to make a paste. Apply to the back two to three times a week and wash off when dry. Wash your hair three times a week. Rinse well with water. After shampooing, add the juice of one lemon to a glass of water and use as the final rinse.
Q. My lips are dark and dry. Please tell me how to lighten the color.
A. The skin of the lips is very thin and delicate. If the lips are damp after washing your face, gently rub them with a soft towel. This will help remove dead skin. Add a few drops of lemon juice to the milk cream (malai) and apply to the lips. Leave on for an hour. Apply pure almond oil to the lips every day at night and leave it on overnight. Look for a lip balm with sunscreen.
Q. I have had chickenpox on my face for years. How can you get rid of them?
A. If the marks are in the form of pits in the skin, they can be minimized with Veg Peel treatments at a skin care clinic. You can also try some home remedies. Make a paste out of soda bicarbonate and some water. After washing in the morning, apply the paste to the marked areas every day and wash off after 5 minutes. Use a face scrub twice a week. Rice powder and curd make a good exfoliator. Apply it on the face and rub it gently on the skin using small circular movements, especially on the spots with spots. Wash off with water. Take two teaspoons of cottage cheese, add a pinch of turmeric and apply to the face every day. Wash off after 15 minutes. It relieves any dryness and also helps with stains.
Q. My arms are dark and my skin is rough. Can you suggest some home remedies to remove the tan and soften the skin?
A. Apply sesame oil (bis) daily and massage into the skin. Use mild glycerine soap or a soap-free bath gel for bathing. Apply a body lotion immediately after your bath while the skin is still damp. This helps seal in moisture. Mix grams of flour (besan), cottage cheese, lemon juice and a little turmeric (haldi) and apply it to your arms at least three times a week. Wash off after half an hour. Then apply sesame oil and massage it onto the skin as recommended. You can also apply lemon turmeric cream daily.
F. Suggest home remedies for clear and glowing skin.
A. Tonify the skin with rose water daily. Toning stimulates the blood flow to the surface of the skin and gives it a shine. Store rose water in a bowl in the refrigerator and soak cotton pads in it. Use them to wipe and blot the skin. Use a facial scrub once or twice a week. Mix ground almonds with yogurt to exfoliate. Dried and powdered lemon and orange peel or dry and powdered mint leaves can be added to the scrub to give the skin a glow. Apply a scrub to the face and leave it on for a few minutes. Then rub in lightly with small circular movements and wash off with water. A face scrub can also be made with walnut powder, honey, and lemon juice. Mix honey and lemon juice in equal amounts and apply to the face every day. Wash off after 20 minutes. It makes the skin very soft and radiant. Egg white can also be added to this mixture.
Q. I have open pores and dark spots on my face. How can you get rid of them?
A. Open pores occur on oily skin or on oily areas of combination skin due to the overactivity of the sebum glands (oil-producing) of the skin. The constant leakage of oil and clogged pores leads to a loss of elasticity of the pores, which makes them larger. Keeping pores free of clogged oil will avoid open pores. This can be done with skin tightening, exfoliation, and masks. Mix astringent lotion and rose water in equal amounts. Store in the refrigerator and apply to face daily with cotton wool. It helps close your pores. Use a face scrub twice a week. Mix rice powder with quark and a little turmeric (Haldi). Apply to face and rub in gently, especially on open pores and dark spots. Leave on for 5 minutes and wash off with water.
