A Dallas police officer was beaten and killed by a suspected drunk driver Saturday morning, authorities said.
The officer blocked the scene of a previous accident on the North Central Expressway around 1:45 am when he was hit by a man “traveling at high speed,” according to a Dallas Police Department press release.
The officer stood in front of his patrol car with the emergency lighting activated, the police said. He was taken to Baylor Hospital, where he died.
The department did not name the officer.
Tragic night for us. This is a small token of respect and admiration for a fallen brother and his family. Thank you to all Fire / EMS and to Baylor Medical Center for your tireless efforts. Take a rest, hero. We’ll take it from here. pic.twitter.com/Dxu0AO06a8

Chief Eddie Garcia announced the death in a tweet, saying the department is “grieving again.”
“But we are encouraged by the strength of his family. Thank God my brother,” wrote Garcia.
In a second Twitter post, the boss shared a video of officials lining up in front of the hospital to show their respect.
“Tragic night for us. This is a small token of respect and admiration for a fallen brother and his family,” he wrote. “Get some rest, hero. We’ll take it from here.”
Mayor Eric Johnson expressed his condolences to the officer in a series of tweets.
“Dallas today mourns the devastating loss of one of our cops. He died far too young, but the measure of a life is not longevity, it is what someone does with the time he has. And that cop devoted his time to that Serving our great city in an inherently dangerous job, “he said.
“We are forever indebted to him and broken forever by this tragedy. I pray today for his family, friends and colleagues. I know that our city will give them love and support as we seek justice.”
According to the police, the 32-year-old driver was “intoxicated” at the time of the accident. The driver and a passenger were not injured in the accident.
The man has been taken into custody and charges are pending. The woman was questioned by the police. Their names were not published.
