SAN PEDRO, LOS ANGELES (KABC) – Two people were killed and five others injured when gunfire was exchanged at a park in San Pedro on Sunday, police said.
Of the seven who were hit by gunfire, four were initially in critical condition when they were transported to local hospitals, police say.
Authorities later said two people died in hospital.
The incident was reported just before 4:00 p.m. at or near a car show at Peck Park on N. Western Avenue. Police said although the shooting happened near the show, where hundreds of people had gathered, the shooting did not appear to have happened on the show itself.
Witnesses said hundreds of people had gathered around the park for the car show and other activities. When shots erupted, people immediately ran away from the scene, terrified.
“Suddenly we heard three shots – pow pow pow,” witness Dwayne Ellis said. “Then we heard about 50 or 100 more – pow pow, boom boom. All kinds of shots. People ran.”
Police say the incident began as an argument between two people in the area of the park’s baseball field. They said it was not an active shooter situation.
Police are investigating the likelihood that more than one gunman fired shots.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said four men and three women were taken to local hospitals.
Police cordoned off the area around the park while investigating the shooting.
Information about the suspected shooters was initially not available.
